History: Link to fandom wiki. This is the only really good Character history for Wei Wuxian even though it follows closer to the novel timeline. Here is a specific wiki for the overall history of The Untamed. Because I'm apping from the drama, but his character history I linked is for the novel I wanted to make a few distinguishes between the two just so it is clear since neither history really goes into these differences.
There are several main differences between the genres even though the underlying story is the same. Most of it has to deal with the timelines and the fact that Chinese censorship laws meant that all the boy-love aspects of the novel/web-comic had to be removed. So although there is a feel in the show that the two main characters are close, you don't ever see any of the more physical aspects of their relationship in the drama. The biggest divergence in plot between "The Untamed" and "Mo Dao Zu Shi" is in the middle of both and involves how Wei Wuxian dies and is reincarnated.
In the drama he throws himself off the side of the mountain after he loses control of the spirits and his sister dies. No one is every able to find him or his body in the area below but it is assumed he has died. In the novel, Lan Wangji takes him away from the mountain and tries to help him, healing him and fighting against his own sect in order to do so. Jiang Cheng then led the First Siege of the Burial Mounds that resulted in the slaughter of the Qishan Wen Sect remnants and it was then that Wei Wuxian died from spiritual backlash.
Which brings in the second major difference between the mediums. In "The Untamed" when Wei Wuxian is reincarnated, he retains the same appearance as he did when he died. He has no knowledge as to what happened in the 16 years he was gone, as to whether he actually died or has just been missing. All he really can figure out is that Mo Xuanyu was able to summon his spirit into this new body. Because he still retains his same appearance he wears a mask to hide his identity. However, in the novel Wei Wuxian's body is Mo Xuanyu and so his appearance and everything is that of the body he inhabits. He has to take on all the characteristics of that man, even the rumors of him being gay, in order to try fool people into believing he is still Mo Xuanyu. Which is why it is so odd to him that Lan Wangji was able to realize it is him so early in the novel.
The novel also goes well past the drama, in that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get married and there are several chapters after what is the end of the drama where they are going around as cultivating partners. For the most part the story line and events within it are the same for all the genres as well as his personality and his interactions with the various people.
CRAU History and Impact: N/A
Personality: Wei Wuxian is energetic and mischievous and even after dying and being reinstated those traits stayed true. He is often seen drinking or flirting with whomever he could.Because of his antics, many assumed he was a playboy and has kissed many girls. But in truth at the time he was just a teen that liked to play around and never actually kissed anyone.
Many times he would break rules just because he could, despite knowing he would be punished severely for them. On his first night at Cloud Recesses he broke several rules including bringing alcohol into the sect, coming in after curfew and fighting. There were numerous occasions where these particular rules were difficult for him to keep in tact. There was even one point where not only did he manage to get himself and his friends into trouble, but also pulled Lan Wangji into their punishment with him when he controlled the other man and forced him to drink alcohol, breaking a sect rule which was something Lan Wangji would never do.
But despite being very carefree, Wei Wuxian has a very strong heart. Wei Wuxian cares deeply for those he loves and will do anything to protect them. His selflessness is so strong and true that he even gave up his own Golden Core and had it transplanted into his sworn brother Jiang Cheng after Jiang Cheng's own core had been melted. During the transplant, Wei Wuxian endured the entire operation awake and without pain medication for two nights and one day. He never told his brother what he did and lived with that secret for a long time. Living without a Golden Core meant he could no longer follow the path of the cultivator without using the dark arts and despite that he still went through with it because he knew how much it would crush Jiang Cheng to be a normal human.
Intelligent and inventive, Wei Wuxian openly inquired to Lan Qiren whether there was a way to utilize resentful energy instead of suppressing it. This way of thinking is frowned upon in the Cultivating world and once again had him kicked out and punished by the leader of the Lan sect. He has always been one to look at things in a different light then most people and challenging what others have always felt was the right path, constantly looking for alternatives. Once he found himself thrown into the Burial Mounds without his golden core, he mastered Demonic Cultivation as a means to survive in that place. He was surrounded by nothing but resentful spirits for three months and in order to keep himself from being consumed and killed within that space, with no golden core to help him, he learned everything he could through self teaching. He emerged from the Burial Mounds three months later as a different person who was capable of massacring an entire supervisory office by just using music and the spirits in the area. Because of the anger and revenge in his heart from what the Wen Clan did, he felt no remorse as he used his skills to punish everyone that was involved with destroying the home he had known most of his life.
Wei Wuxian has a strong sense of justice and a desire to protect the innocent no matter who they are or what they had done in the past. As a result of his sense of justice, however, he was at times capable of ruthlessness: torturing Wen Chao to death for his role in the massacre of Lotus Pier being the most gruesome of his methods. He also used Demonic Cultivation to have members of the Qishan Wen Sect killed by the corpses of their own families and friends when he was taking his revenge. He also used the dead Wen sect members that had been imprisoned by the Jin sect to kill the ones who had killed them, which included Wen Ning whom he was able to turn into a Fierce Corpse. Eventually, using the Stygian Tiger Seal, he battled three thousand cultivators that at one time he had stood next to on the battle field when they were taking down the Wen sect during the Sunshot Compaign. Because of the use of the Demonic Cultivation, his mind is often overwhelmed by the dark energy and the sounds of the spirits talking. There are times when he would be in a place and he couldn't concentrate because the spirits were just too loud. Lan Wangji was often worried that the dark cultivation methods would taint his heart and his mind, but Wei Wuxian was adamant that he could control them. However, it became clear that he couldn't always suppress the dark urges and at times he did lose control of the spirits he thought he was in control of. This was most evident when the anger and betrayal he felt became too great at Nevernight City.
Nevertheless, Wei Wuxian is more than capable of expressing regret and admitting his faults and often feels guilty about his actions and how they have affected others. Because of how he sees the world his beliefs and how he conducts himself is often against everyone else, he finds himself always ending up as the villain in their eyes and everyone takes out what is wrong or bad with the world and blame it on him. And he accepts that and lets people cast him as the bad guy even though most of the stories and rumors they have created are lies or exaggerations over the truth. He feels haunted by the death of his sister and her husband, blaming himself for losing control of the spirits and Wen Ning, the puppet he created, and causing their deaths. The remorse and despair he felt for causing such a travesty is part of why he decided to kill himself, freeing the world from the monster that was created through the dark arts. He threw himself off a cliff to end his life, never expecting to rise up again and even after he was reinstated, those feelings of guilt still remained.
Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping:
Abilities
Paper Metamorphosis: dangerous dark arts technique that allows him to affix his soul to a piece of paper and it can travel around with his consciousness while his body remains empty and immobile. What makes this dangerous is if the paper gets destroyed, so will his soul. There is a time limit that he has to getting back into his own body.
Empathy: The mastery of this ability allows Wei Wuxian to view the memories someone by entering their mind and seeing what they saw through their eyes. This means he also feels everything that they did as they felt it, which can be difficult on the body. If he doesn't get released from Empathy by another person he could become lost.
Hearing: because of his use of Demonic Cultivation, Wei Wuxian possesses a unique ability to hear nearby spirits. He can become overwhelmed by just how loud a place can be when there are many spirits in one spot.
Musical Abilities/Demonic Cultivation: He uses the flute to summon and control evil spirits, ghosts, puppets and undead by manipulating the resentful energy of the area and the creatures
Spirit-Attraction: Can be used as a flag or drawn on any surface including oneself and is capable of attracting any creature holding resentful energy within a certain radius with the flag/person being the primary target of their aggression.
Talismans: Wei Wuxian has been able to utilize a wide variety talismans. For instance, he demonstrated a spell to create small butterflies made of light, the ability to freeze people with and without a talisman, and scour areas for spiritual abnormalities. Additionally, he demonstrated the ability to begin a fire from his own blood during his fight against the Tortoise of Slaughter.
Fierce Corpses: Because of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian has the ability to create fierce corpses out of the dead. They can be used to attack whomever he wants them to through the use of Chenqing. In some cases he is able to give them their mental consciousness back so that they behave like normal people, but when needed can be controlled into serving him. In order to control them he has to have been the one to make them so they recognize him as their master.
Warping
Since most of his powers are spirit based, I understand that some will probably have to be nerfed in some way since these kinds of attacks are typically untouched in Deerington. I expect that any time he tries to use any of them in succession or over an extended period of time it will greatly damage his body. He already gets nightmares because of the over use of demonic cultivation but now he will be more likely to get nose bleeds, body pain and headaches depending on how much he tries to use it. His talismans are going to backfire when he tries to use them. If he tries to use fire then he might get water instead. They will have the opposite effect of what he expects if he were to use them normally. He will typically only use his paper dolls or empathy if he is very desperate for answers and they are needed on missions when there are no other options available because they are very risky and hard on his body. Being just a normal human all of his abilities tend to take more of a toll on his body then they would for a normal cultivator. In regards to Fierce Corpses, he will find that no matter what he does they will not see him as their master and therefore will refuse to be controlled by him.
Weaknesses
Wei Wuxian's weakness is his emotions. He cares too deeply and that often gets him hurt. He is often very self sacrificing and will give up himself to protect the people he cares about. He doesn't see getting hurt to be important as long as the ones he loves are protected. This means that in canon he has found himself to be hurt on many occasions. Not to mention he has very little care for rules or decorum which often gets him in trouble. Many times he questions authority just because he wants to, or will break a rule just out of boredom. These emotions are often his downfall which is why they are his greatest weakness. Physical weakness is he is just a normal human and his body is weak and made more so by the use of the demonic cultivation that often infects the mind and the heart. Also dogs...he is deeply terrified of dogs. This is from a childhood experience where he would have to fight with dogs for food because he was alone on the streets. And so he became very afraid of dogs and always runs away and hides when he sees or hears one.
Inventory:
1. Chenqing - his flute
2. Clothing - hanfu robes and undergarments, black shoes, hair wrap
He honestly doesn't need anything besides those items. He typically doesn't carry anything with him.

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Yes
What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: I love when the horror is more mind based then slasher style. Something that really puts a character up against themselves and tests their abilities to look at the worst side of themselves and see how they deal with it.
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Nope
Additional Information: Can't think of anything!
