Canon Information

History: Link to fandom wiki. This is the only really good Character history for Wei Wuxian even though it follows closer to the novel/webcomic timeline. The differences between Mo Dao Zu Shi and The Untamed is mostly having to do with slight differences between the order of events. Here is a specific wiki for the overall history of The Untamed but it doesn't cover a whole lot.

REVISION: How similar are the different mediums of this fandom? How similar is the show to the novel/web comic?
There are several main differences between the genres even though the underlying story is the same. Most of it has to deal with the timelines and the fact that Chinese censorship laws meant that all the boy-love aspects of the novel/web-comic had to be removed. So although there is a feel in the show that the two main characters are close, you don't ever see any of the more physical aspects of their relationship in the drama. The biggest divergence in plot between "The Untamed" and "Mo Dao Zu Shi" is in the middle of both and involves how Wei Wuxian dies and is reincarnated.

In the drama he throws himself off the side of the mountain after he loses control of the spirits and his sister dies. No one is every able to find him or his body in the area below but it is assumed he has died. In the novel, Lan Wangji takes him away from the mountain and tries to help him, healing him and fighting against his own sect in order to do so. Jiang Cheng then led the First Siege of the Burial Mounds that resulted in the slaughter of the Qishan Wen Sect remnants and it was then that Wei Wuxian died from spiritual backlash.

Which brings in the second major difference between the mediums. In "The Untamed" when Wei Wuxian is reincarnated, he retains the same appearance as he did when he died. He has no knowledge as to what happened in the 16 years he was gone, as to whether he actually died or has just been missing. All he really can figure out is that Mo Xuanyu was able to summon his spirit into this new body. Because he still retains his same appearance he wears a mask to hide his identity. However, in the novel Wei Wuxian's body is Mo Xuanyu and so his appearance and everything is that of the body he inhabits. He has to take on all the characteristics of that man, even the rumors of him being gay, in order to try fool people into believing he is still Mo Xuanyu. Which is why it is so odd to him that Lan Wangji was able to realize it is him so early in the novel.

The novel also goes well past the drama, in that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get married and there are several chapters after what is the end of the drama where they are going around as cultivating partners. For the most part the story line and events within it are the same for all the genres as well as his personality and his interactions with the various people.

End Revision

Personality: Wei Wuxian is energetic and mischievous. He is often seen drinking or flirting with whomever he could, often times to try and get something out of the deal like free food or drinks. In the beginning this is mostly women but as the series goes on his flirting went on to include Lan Wangji, whom he eventually gained feelings for. Many times he would break rules just because he could, despite knowing he would be punished severely for them. But despite being very carefree, Wei Wuxian has a very strong heart. Wei Wuxian cares deeply for those he loves and will do anything to protect them. His selflessness is so strong that he even gave up his own Golden Core and had it transplanted into his sworn brother Jiang Cheng after Jiang Cheng's own core had been melted.

Intelligent and inventive, Wei Wuxian questioned whether there was a way to utilize resentful energy instead of suppressing it, but this goes against all the main principles of regular Cultivation so it is a dangerous path to walk. Once he found himself thrown into the Burial Mounds without his golden core, he invented Demonic Cultivation and within three months was capable of massacring an entire supervisory office by just using music and the spirits in the area. Wei Wuxian has a strong sense of justice and a desire to protect the innocent no matter who they are or what they had done in the past. As a result of his sense of justice, however, he was at times capable of ruthlessness acts that eventually got him cast out of the cultivator world and deemed a criminal. Nevertheless, Wei Wuxian is more than capable of expressing regret and admitting his faults and often feels guilty about his actions and how they have affected others. Because of how he sees the world his beliefs and how he conducts himself is often against everyone else, he finds himself always ending up as the villain in their eyes and everyone takes out what is wrong or bad with the world and blame it on him. And he accepts that and lets people cast him as the bad guy.

Earth AU

Earth AU Name: Wei Wuxian
Earth AU Age: 23

History: Wei Wuxian was orphaned as a child and spent most of his time in and out of foster homes. He wasn't a troubled youth but he was rambunctious and had liked to get into mischief, which meant he never really found a family that could keep up with him. But he also knew how to work hard, and was a genius when it came to schooling or skills. He could do just about any job or task you put in front of him. But his tendency to question authority often landed him in detention. But his grades were good so he was on a fast track to any school he could possibly have wanted. But for him, he had no interest in continuing his education. His free spirit and wild ways couldn't handle being contained into a classroom for another four years. Not when he already believed he knew everything he could possibly need to survive and felt like he could out wit any other human on the planet.

So instead of jumping into college, he went straight to looking for work. He had held small odd jobs throughout school and had saved up enough money to survive on his own once he aged out of the foster system. He had been doing his legwork, with making friends and contacts all over the city so that when the time came for him to become a member of the working class, he would be able to jump right in. And so after only a few days of looking, he landed the kind of job he knew would give him the freedom to have fun, while also enjoying some of the excitement of being an honest worker.

That is, if you can call working at a club an honest job. Some might look down on the work or say that he could do better with his intelligence, but Wei Wuxian wasn't looking to be locked in an office all day. He needed that free spirit life, and club life was just that. He started off as a dancer, backup at first until the owners saw just what he could do. So he got moved up to main performer, singing and dancing each night for a nice wage and even nicer tips. It wasn't erotic dancing or anything of the sort. Wei Wuxian was talented enough to be a legit performer and so he got quite the fanbase to the point where the club decided to sell merchandise with his face on it. He was quite handsome with the looks of a kpop star and the moves and voice of one too. He could have become famous and rich if he wanted, but again, that wasn't his style.

Once he reached drinking age, Wei Wuxian became an all around man at the club. Performer, bartender, waiter or just plain host. He could go from table to table and talk to anyone in the room, making them feel like they were the most important person in the universe. The money was good, Wei Wuxian had his days off to do whatever he wanted and had made enough friends and contacts in the world to be able to get away with murder if he so chose. But that also came with its share of haters as well. When boyfriends and husbands found out that their women were going out every night to see a playboy perform, or sit with him and have a few drinks, Wei Wuxian's life became a little more dangerous. But he doesn't let anything stop him from doing what he enjoys which is why he often spent time at a local gym learning karate as a means of self protection. He made it to black belt within record time and now anytime someone causes issues at the club, he is often the one willing to jump in and handle it. Not to mention, karate moves can be made into some pretty fun dance moves for when he takes the stage.

During the day he often sleeps late, keeping a pretty regular schedule of sleeping at 3AM and waking at 10AM. Then his days are spent either lounging at home, working out, or enjoying the city life before heading to work.

Personality:Much like his canon counterpart, Wei Wuxian is energetic and mischievous and constantly challenging authority. He likes to stir up trouble and see just how far he can push someone before they want to punish him in some way. He is a skilled drinker that almost seems to never get drunk, or at least is very good at hiding it. Able to drink an entire night away without ever feeling a hangover the next day. He also loves to flirt with whomever he can and that is often how he makes his best money. Women pay to be able to spend time with him, drink with him and just enjoy his company. And sometimes so do the men. Wei Wuxian likes them both equally and enjoys living life to the fullest.

Despite his vices, Wei Wuxian has a big heart and once you have become a member of his very select inner circle, he would die for you. He doesn't like seeing anyone get hurt and even though he is more of a lover then a fighter, he won't hesitate to take someone down if they physically or emotionally abuse a person in front of him. He doesn't take kindly to those that want to pick on someone weaker. But despite that he doesn't just let anyone become completely close to him. Because he never really had a family to love him, he in turn has a hard time just trusting someone enough to let them truly into his heart. So he has never been in love, despite loving his friends to the depths of his core.

Highly intelligent and fully aware of that fact and how good looking he is, Wei Wuxian has a bit of an ego and likes to show off. He's a natural performer and all that confidence really shines when he is on stage. He loves the attention and will often do things or pick fights with people just so he can show off just how smart he is. He isn't just book smart, but also street smart with an overall wisdom of the world that makes him hard to beat when it comes to a match of wits. Tack on that he also knows he looks good with his shirt off and you have a dangerous combination.

Physical description: Same as canon only with short hair instead of long.

Here is a couple links so you can see him in action with other people in his normal world: Prose style and Action style. And then here is a Third Person style for in game:

It happened as Wei Wuxian was leaving his home and heading to work. He was in a good mood, whistling the last tune he had just heard on the radio, smile bright on his face that matched the sun in the sky. The sounds of the city all around him and he scooted easily between people until he reached the back alleys that made traveling to the club that much faster. It was easier this way, less chance of being recognized and he could pick up the speed, jogging to get his daily exercise. But then everything stopped. It was like the world was pealed away and that city turned into a building on fire. He stopped jogging and looked around in confusion, his smile fading away and turning to an expression of horror.

There was screaming and sounds of swords colliding with one another. Blood was everywhere and the bodies of two people, a man and a women, were collapsed before him. The clothing was old, reminiscent of times long gone. Brightly colored robes with embroidery, jade hair sticks in dark hair that cascaded to both their waists. And large dark pools of blood, spreading across the rich silks.

His heart felt like it wanted to explode and tears were running down his face without even understanding why. It was like he knew these people but he was sure he had never seen them before. He wanted so badly to cover his ears and try to block away the screams while wanting to add his own to them, but he felt frozen in place as if he couldn't look away even if he wanted to. Why was this happening to him?

And then it was over. Wei Wuxian had the image burned into his brain as if he had actually lived it, but instead of the sounds of war there is only the sounds of the city again. What kind of terrible hangover was this? He was still very out of it when the men came and tried to explain it was a memory.

If that was his past life...he wanted nothing to do with it. There was no way that could have been something that really happened. It was too horrifying. But those emotions he felt were real, as if he had just seen his parents killed and he had been powerless to stop it. As someone who never actually knew his parents, that was a feeling he couldn't quite shake.

No one was going to know about this. He wasn't going to ruin the good thing he had going because of some messed up daydream he had. He stuck his headphones in and turned away from the people who were trying to explain it to him. He definitely didn't want to hear any of this.
